Vineyard Wind Integrates All Installed Turbines Into Aircraft Detection Lighting System
BOSTON, MA – July 31, 2025 – Following months of progress and diligent work, Vineyard Wind today announced that it has completed the integration of all installed wind turbines into its Aircraft Detection Lighting System (ADLS). ADLS is a radar-activated lighting system that activates the FAA required lighting only when planes are within a specified distance of wind turbines. ADLS reduces the nighttime lighting of offshore wind projects while complying with federal aviation safety requirements. With the system active on installed turbines, the ability to visualize the project lighting at night will be significantly reduced.
“Recognizing that this lighting system is a critical priority for our neighboring island communities, Vineyard Wind has worked hard for the past year to accelerate the deployment and implementation of ADLS across the project as quickly as possible,” said Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus S. Møller. “This is a complex technology requiring extensive work and coordination between various contractors and construction teams, and I would like to thank them for their efforts in activating this system as commissioning continues. As the project advances, the system will be integrated into additional turbines.”
Vineyard Wind is the first offshore wind project to voluntarily commit to installing ADLS once the project reached commercial operations, procuring the system from a number of qualified contractors including GE Vernova and Semco. Entering July 2025, Vineyard Wind had a functioning radar system across the entire radius of the project, and the lighting system functional on more than 60% of installed turbines. Throughout July 2025, Vineyard Wind was successful in integrating the system on the remaining turbines.
With the system activated, lights on the turbine towers will flash if an aircraft enters the project radar radius, and will cease flashing once the aircraft exits the area. Blinking lights indicate that an aircraft is traveling within the radius of the project, as required by federal aviation safety regulations. As construction continues and the ADLS is integrated on additional turbines, the lights may be periodically activated due to a number of factors. More turbines will be brought online as installation continues, and some blinking may be observed as commissioning of the system takes place.
